Thursday Afternoon, Bitterwoman A-4

For someone unaccustomed to owning a phone, let alone voice mail, having a message waiting when she returned from her weekly meeting with Professor Skywalker was a new experience for Raven. She was nervous yet pleased to find she had been assigned a job in town. Joan had suggested she get a job so that she would have money to do things that normal girls did, but she had no idea how to go about finding one. Apparently the school made the process easier by assigning students to jobs, which was the only explanation as to why Ms. Blue had called her.

She was not certain what 'Dite's Decadent Delights was -- it sounded like a candy store, or perhaps a pastry shop. She would have to go see Ms. Blue and find out what her duties would be before Tuesday. Having money would be nice, though she was not sure what she would spend it on. New candles and incense, or perhaps some books. She was loathe to expand her wardrobe beyond the identical simple black dresses she owned. Colors were almost as terrifying as her father.

Between the new job and the meeting of the Magic Reserves yesterday, things seemed to be going well. Now if only she could figure out how to solve a problem like Tahiri....

Joan knocked on the wall between their alcoves.

"Rachel? You busy?"

Sitting cross-legged on her bed, Raven said, "No, I am not, Joan. Can I help you with something?"

Joan walked over to the other girl's alcove. "Just wondering if you had any plans for the weekend."

"No, I do not," Raven said, indicating for Joan to sit on the bed with her if she should like to.

"My friend Penelope and I are planning a girls night out this weekend," Joan said, sitting down. "She's celebrating and I thought it would be fun if you came with us."

"What is a girls night out?" Raven asked. "Where do you go?"

"It's a night when the girls go out to have fun without boys," Joan explained. "We haven't figured out where we're going yet. Probably one of the restaurants on the island. Maybe Caritas."

"I would be pleased to join you," Raven said. "But you will probably have to tell me what I should be doing."

"There's nothing special you have to do," Joan assured her. "It's just fun. Though, if you want, we can go shopping and get you a new outfit."

Raven looked down at herself. "Is my dress not appropriate?"

"It's fine," Joan said tactfully. "But it's what you wear every day. Maybe we can get you something in a nice blue or green."

"This is what I have always worn," Raven said. "Except smaller when I was younger."

"You never dressed up for special occasions?" Joan asked.

Raven shook her head. "No. We did not have any celebrations on Azarath."

"Well, then we should definitely go shopping," Joan decided.

Was it possible to look scared at the thought of shopping? Because that's how Raven looked at the moment.

"It'll be fine," Joan said, noticing the look.

"I do not yet have any money to make any purchases," Raven said.

Joan shrugged. "Don't worry about it. My parents sent me some money for my birthday last month."

"I will have money of my own soon to repay you," Raven said. "I have a job now."

"Oh? Where did you end up getting one?" Joan asked.

"I am not certain yet," Raven admitted. "I only received word today that I was to be given a job in town. I hope it is something I can do well."

Joan was confused by that. "You didn't go and apply for it?"

[trigons_child]

"No," Raven said. "I received a message this morning that I had a job. I thought that was the way it was done, that the school assigned me a job?"

"I've only heard of that with TA positions," Joan said. "But... who knows."

"I will have to ask," Raven said. "I did not realize that was not the way things worked. I have never had a job before, either."

Joan smiled. "I'm sure it'll be fine, whatever it is. I can't think of any place in town that would be bad to work."

Mostly because she hadn't heard about the new store. Oops.

Raven smiled gently. "There is much I have not done before, as I am sure you know," she said. "I am grateful for your guidance."
